Photo Contest for Oxford and Blanchester
Thanks to the efforts of the Oxford Visitor's Bureau, Oxford Walmart, Barker Ornaments, and anonymous donors we have prizes for RAAM 2010. Check out the photo rules here.
For great ideas on how to photograph a bicycle race click on this photo. John Foote made this photo of Tony O'Keeffe (Canada) on a hot Utah climb. Tony's crew member cools him of with a water mist. John lives in Troy, Ohio. He and wife Cindy follow and photograph the race from coast to coast. During the race we will post updates of John's photos on our web site. John's web site: http://www.ultraracepics.com/
Where, When, and How to see the racers of RAAM
You can watch RAAM anywhere along the route. You will see the detail route maps on the web site. However, the time stations offer the best chance to share the excitement of RAAM. At these stations you get the latest information, meet other fans who have often driven for many miles to see their favorites and become a part of the growing RAAM community in Southwest Ohio. Time stations are located at the McDonald's Restaurants in Oxford and Blanchester.
You can find out when racers are expected at these time stations by visiting the web site or following us on Twitter at OHIORAAM. You need not be a Twitter subscriber to see the posts. We also display the latest Twitter posts on the home page of the web site.
On the top left of the page you will see links to the arrivals at the four time stations before Ohio as well as our two stations.
You will also see arrival forecasts for both Oxford and Blanchester. The forecasts are mathematical projections based on riders' average speeds. Early in the race these projections usually forecast arrival times much earlier than actual times. The projections become informative once a racer has crossed the Mississippi River--350 miles from the Ohio border.
All race times are given in Eastern Daylight time.
Volunteer sign-ups in full swing
Thanks to all who have signed up to staff a time station. We have filled most time slots. A few gaps remain and we can use more workers for slots filled by one person. Several people working a shift together makes it more enjoyable.
Veteran RAAM time station staffers have filled most of the slots. You can learn a lot about RAAM, hear stories from previous races and find out the hottest news and rumors from the race course by joining one of these long time RAAM supporters at a time station.
Check the time schedule here and then email the station captain at the top of the page with the times you wish to serve. Join the excitement as a part of The World's Toughest Bicycle Race.
"Why anyone would work during the night?" Those who do will tell you RAAM is often won or lost at night. The time stations are cool and solo riders often stop there to get their hour or two of sleep. Crews reorganize and work on bicycles. Officials take a bit of time out to rest and chat. Media crews stop to do interviews and work on news feeds.. You can see a lot of RAAM in the middle of the night.
For more information and suggestions on what happens and what to bring, check out the [Volunteer Information] tab on the web site.
Recycling Day at Oxford - June 18
The Glass Packaging Institute is one of the sponsors of RAAM. Recycle Glass Week will have a booth at the Oxford time station. They will provide giveaways, including organic Recycle Glass Week/Race Across America t-shirts, glass water bottles, stickers, and affinity bracelets. Glass container representatives from Saint-Gobain Containers, O-I, and Spear labeling will be at the time station to answer questions about glass container recycling. Stop by to recycle and a chance to win a prize.

Team Type 1 (2009) set the coast to coast crossing record in 5 days 9 hours 3 minutes. They plan to break that record in 2010 proving that diabetes does not limit what determined athletes can do. The team and crew love to visit with young victims of this disease as they cross the nation.

Dark Horse? Mark Pattinson (UK) named Rookie of the Year in 2008 reported riding very well.
