"I am nobody
special. Let's be perfectly clear. I don't like to run. I don't
like to swim. I don't like to bike. I do this to raise money
for the children of soldiers killed in combat. "
David Goggin US Navy Seal
These are the words of David Googins who just took up running
in 2005. Within a year he would find himself running the 135
mile Badwater Ultra Marathon in Death Valley where temperatures
often reach 120 degrees during the race. Soon there after, he
would find himself competing in his first triathlon, actually
an Ultraman which is the equivalent of two Ironman Triathlons
in one. He would even have to borrow a bike for it as he didn't
even own one.
"My
greatest achievement has been my recovery from drug addiction
and alcoholism."
Charlie Engle
These are the words of Charlie Engle, who along with Ray
Zahab (Canada) and Kevin Lin (Taiwan), just ran across the Sahara
Desert in February, 2009. They ran over 4500 miles in 111 days
for an average of 42 miles or more a day. Charlie is no stranger
to challenges. He has completed numerous multi-day Eco Challenges,
ultra marathon runs and cycling races through deserts and jungles
all around the world. For a second time, he will be competing
in the 2009 Race Across America.
More Racer Information
These are just a few profiles of solo racers that will be
competing in the 2009 race. For more, see our racer profile tab
on our home page for each solo racer. We have also added a few
videos and news clips in the video tab section.
The list of achievements for each of our solo racers is so
lengthy, we pulled just a few that we hoped would help you gain
a much better understanding of just how incredible these athletes
are and how tough the field really is. The 2009 race has athletes
who are not only ultra cyclists but also includes ultra marathon
runners, Ironman and Ultra Ironman tri-athletes, a English Channel
swimmer, cross-country snow skiers, eco competitor, mountaineers,
rock climber, to just name a few. They are not only driven in
the sports that they compete in but also in their professional
lives.
So be sure to tell your friends, co-workers, and family. Bring
them along with you to see the "World's Toughest Bicycle
Race" as it passes through our community. Race
Update: Currently the 2009 RAAM has 26 solo racers and 32
